COSMO Android vs iOS:
Why Android Comes First

The technical and platform reasons why COSMO appears designed exclusively for Android — and what that means for iOS users.

The Android Advantage

COSMO's reported feature set relies on deep system-level integration that Android provides and iOS currently restricts. This isn't simply a business decision — it's a technical necessity given COSMO's proactive, screen-aware architecture.

Platform Comparison

CapabilityAndroidiOS
AccessibilityService✅ Full screen-reading API❌ Not available to third-party apps
On-device AI (Gemini Nano)✅ Supported via AI Core❌ No equivalent third-party API
System-level integration✅ Deep OS access for apps❌ Sandboxed app environment
Default assistant override✅ Can replace default assistant❌ Siri cannot be replaced
Background processing✅ Flexible background services⚠️ Limited by iOS restrictions
Cross-app data access✅ With user permission❌ Strictly sandboxed
Browser automation✅ Via AccessibilityService/intents❌ No third-party browser control

Why iOS Can't Run COSMO (Yet)

Several of COSMO's core capabilities fundamentally depend on Android-specific APIs:

  • Screen reading: COSMO reportedly uses Android's AccessibilityService to read on-screen content. iOS does not allow third-party apps to access screen content from other apps.
  • Proactive actions: Taking autonomous actions across apps requires system permissions that iOS restricts to Apple's own services (like Siri).
  • On-device AI: COSMO bundles Gemini Nano for local AI processing. Apple does not currently expose NPU access for this kind of third-party AI model deployment.
  • Background intelligence: COSMO needs to run continuously to be proactive. iOS heavily restricts background app activity to preserve battery and privacy.

Could COSMO Ever Come to iOS?

A limited version is theoretically possible, but it would lack COSMO's most defining features. Without screen reading, system-level integration, and on-device AI, an iOS version would essentially be a standard chatbot — losing the proactive agent capabilities that make COSMO distinctive.

Possible paths to iOS include:

  • Apple relaxing third-party AI integration restrictions in future iOS versions
  • A cloud-only COSMO experience accessible via web browser
  • A partnership between Google and Apple (unlikely given competitive dynamics)
